How does a Security System work?
A security system is a closed loop. There is a continuous signal sent throughout to detection devices. Detection devices signal an alarm when they are "tripped." The signal alarms sirens and sends another signal to a Central Station (monitored alarm) where decisions are made based on a protocol.

A $99 security system will get you two contacts a motion detector and a keypad. You will also have a higher monthly monitoring charge. These "deals" are used to get a salesman into your home or business to up-sale you on the equipment necessary to secure you properly. A $99 system is not going to protect you or your assets unless you live in a studio. Don't think that you are getting a good deal just because the up front costs are low, because you will pay in the long run.

How should I budget for Security?
Simple. What are your security requirements? Fort Knox or Family Protection, etc. you have to take account of your needs and configure how much that is worth.

What are the best brands of Security Equipment?
There are so many brands out there, I cannot go over them all. Ask your security installer what brand of Control Panel and Equipment they are installing. Then research the internet, or even call some other companies and see what they have to say about that brand. They may say "that's great equipment, I use it in my house," or they may say that it is unreliable and faulty.

Is a Security System for my business similar to that in my home?
The equipment is usually similar in a home and business, but the design of the system should be very different because home security has a very different mission than business security.

How can I get a quality Security System without spending very much money?
If you go cheap on a security system you will regret it. Over time, you will pay more because service costs will add up, it may not function when you need it, and the unreliability may cause you to get a new system shortly after. Definitely question the costs of security, but if you go cheap your will regret your decision. Think in terms of service (and headaches) and long term savings. Monitoring should not be over $35, unless you have some of the installation costs built into the monthly. Service is generally around $100/hour, but some companies install poor quality systems in order to get paid to fix it later. Get a good idea of what is covered under warranty. A security company should not be responsible to replace equipment that has been hit with a hammer, and you should not have to pay for equipment that was improperly installed.
